MEET THE CAPTAIN

Your captain for the day will be Harvey Wheeler, who would love to "lip" a nice striper for you.

Harvey grew up in southern Maine and developed an interest in fishing by trolling for salmon with his dad and grandfather during the 1950s. He caught his first salmon on a fly in 1955 and his interest quickly became a passion.

After graduating from high school, he attended Bowdoin College and earned his degree in Biology in 1967. For the next 27 years, Harvey taught biology and coached swimming and diving at Falmouth High School. In 1965, legendary Atlantic Salmon angler, John Mayo took Harvey under his wing, and selflessly shared his wisdom during regular weekend trips to Maine's Narraguagus River.

During the summer of 1985 Harvey earned his Maine Guide's license and began his guiding career on a part time basis. In 1988, salt water fly fishing pioneer, Brock Apfel, hired Harvey to serve as the head instructor for the LL Bean Atlantic Salmon School. This "dream job" took him to the fabled waters of Labrador's Eagle, Hunt and Sandhill Rivers as well as the mother of all North American salmon rivers, New Brunswick's Miramichi.

During Harvey's 9 year relationship with LL Bean, he worked closely with world famous Alaskan and Michigan guide, John Kluesing. John, "the most versatile fly fisherman on the planet", had a profound influence on Harvey, and helped him improve his skills as a fly caster and casting instructor. In 1990, Harvey earned his U.S.C.G. Captain's License, added a boat to his fleet of canoes and began chasing stripers on Maine's famous Kennebec River. Upon retiring from public education in 1994, "Captain" Wheeler became a full time guide/charter captain and now has a loyal group of clients that keep him on the water over 100 days per year.
