Fishing Calendar

Spring - mid May to mid June:

During the second week of May stripers begin to enter our rivers. Some large fish chase the alewives above the head of tide and can be caught on 9" slug-gos, big jigs and magnum deceivers thrown with a 9 - 10 weight fly rod. This freshwater striper fishing includes casting from shore as well as drifting in the current. Therefore, waders or hip boots are helpful. The smallmouth and largemouth fishing continues to shine, but the black flies may add to the challenge. I encourage you to wear "BUZZ OFF" clothing if you have a problem with the Maine "Air Force" and will provide head nets upon request. By mid June, the lower Kennebec, New Meadows and Royal Rivers are teeming with "schoolie" stripers. These fish are very aggressive and will provide non stop action as they munch on small flies and soft plastic baits. Between 5/30 and 6/17 2005, I had three parties that caught and released over 100 stripers. This is the perfect time of the year to get a child excited about fishing or practice hooking and playing fish with a fly rod.

The photo below was taken on 06/08/2007. This is a new record for the biggest striper taken on a trip with the Peenoe.
